Wedding Day

Why is it I never keep this thing up to date!  Considering I wrote a blog about preparing for the wedding i guess I will write a short but sweet blog about how the big day went.

We arrived in Fiji bright and early on the Saturday morning and were checked in straight away (7.30am) into our buree's that had an ocean view and on the decking a spa (got to looooove that).  The girls room was short stroll from ours and I think they enjoyed having their own 'pad'.

The island itself wasn't huge, but we found it perfect for our needs and it included alot of free water activities, including a Catamaran which I thought we were going to get lost out to sea on, lol....we basically went nowhere for an hour.

Gabrielle and Paul got into the 'adventure side' of the holiday, whereas Molly was happy to sunbathe and work on her tan.

We decided not to do anything too strenuous or adventerous before the wedding (i.e. horse riding) just to be on the safe side. I had watched a couple of weddings prior to ours just to get a good perspectice on the whole ceremony and also to perve on what other brides were wearing.  So I felt somewhat relieved to see that an American couple were quite relaxed about their wedding and that the bride had a similar basic flowing gown like mine.

When the big day arrived Paul was booked in for a massage and I for a facial, pedicure and make-up.  It was a lovely morning and I was thinking (actually praying) it was going to be glorious weather.  After lunch I went to the girls buree to get ready and about an hour before the entourage were to pick me up it started raining, but not just any old rain, terential rain! I was somewhat distraught about the whole rain scenario and Paul kept ringing me to assure me it would all be ok.  Luckily the rain stopped and the sun began to peep through the clouds just as my warrior men and flower girls came to collect me.

I was supposed to get into a decorated wedding boat, however due to the choppy seas I decided to give that a miss and just walk to Paul where he was nervously waiting with the minister and choir.  Molly and Gabby looked absolutely gorgeous and the young fijian warriors were ogling her big time and flirting outrageously.   As we walked towards the 'alter' the choir sang and sounded amazing, I could see Paul and he looked very handsome.  Then what seemed like seconds the ceremony was over, I was quite nervous and was having trouble understanding the Fijian priest and was concentrating sooooo hard on the vows as I didn't want to stuff them up!

After the ceremony we had what seemed like a squillion photos taken as well as video footage.  We had canapes and champagne on the beach and i was so hot and thirsty that I seemed to be sculling it.  Molly and Gabby went back to the buree to grab their camera and on the way back Gab slipped on the rocks and cut her leg quite badly, so you can imagine my surprise when she came back bleeding profusely.  She thought it somewhat amusing and had all these photos taken with blood streaming down her leg!

Due to the bad weather, yes it decided an hour after the wedding to rain again, we ditched the dinner on the beach to go into the Plantation restaurant, one of Fiji's finest restaurants for dinner.  It was one of the most enjoyable meals I have had in a long time.

To finish the amazing day off we had a spa on our balcony whilst drinking champagne and eating our wedding cake (which was soo yummy).

The rest of the Fijian holiday we let our hair down a little and went on a day trip snorkling and island hopping.  I adore snorkling and we all had the best day.  Paul has never done it before, even though he worked on cruise ships for 3 years and gave snorkling demonstrations on the boat!!!!!  He used one of those orange and white life rings to float in whilst he snorkled.  That came in rather handy when the girls or I got tired and wanted to hang on and rest for awhile, lol.  Oh and he was easy to spot!

We all had a great holiday/wedding and the hospitality of the Fijians was great.

fiji here i come

Oh boy its been AGES since I wrote a blog....I feel like I must talk to myslef as I truly don't believe anyone reads these!  Oh well.

Booked everything on Tuesday (yeah slack) and we are now leaving to Fiji one week earlier as I had my heart set on Sonaisali Island and getting married there...it has the best wedding package by a long shot, and the BIG Day is now July 5th.  So its just Paul, myslef and the girls.  We have booked 2 lovely ocean front burees, even have our own butler!  My travel agent told me ages ago that the girls passports would be ok as they had 3 months remaining before they expire, however I discovered on Tuesday that you require 6 months!  So we were in a mad panic Wednesday trying to get everythign organised..typical.

If you want to see what the resort looks like check out www.sonaisali.com

I can't wait to have a holiday as work has been frantic lately and just don't seem to be able to relax lately - so it will be nice to do nothing all day.  I do want to go snorkling and horse riding though, but thinking of buying a good book to read on the beach or by the pool as I sip on my cocktail.

Well I still have to organise a couple of things for the wedding, well mainly my wedding shoes and accessories so best be off.

xx

One last thing about Frankfurt Airport...

Oh the most embarrasing thing happened getting through security at Frankfurt on my way to America.  After all the hassle of getting to a security point that didn't have 300 people waiting they did a full on body search, this German Security Gaurd pawed me all over whilst my arms were outstreatched and then put her hands around the tops of my pants and touched my boobs, bum and everything - blah, blah, blah...it was so humiliating.  I felt like saying 'was it good for you'?

Ironically when I travelled from Johannesburg to Frankfurt I just transferred planes with absolutely no hassles what so ever.  I think everyone is paranoid about America!!

Barcelona!

Buenos Dias, or Alla (think that is how u spell it)

Arrived in Barcelona at 8.30am after catchign the sleeper train from Paris.  Actually it wasn´t a bad way to travel, when u think about it at least u get a bed, albeit small, and you are travelling at the same time.  I shared the 4 berth cabin with 2 french ladies and a taiwan-canadian.  They were all really friendly and only one of the french women did not speak english.  We laughed and chatted for a couple of hours before bed - of course I couldn´t shut up as I hadn´t really spoken much for a few days, lol.  One of the French ladies was over 20 weeks pregnant, and apparently there was something wrong with the baby so she had to travel to Spain to get a termination, not pleasant stuff actually, I felt really bad for her as you could obviously tell she was pregnant.  It is illegal in France to terminate so late, and I have a sneaking suspision the same applies in oz.

The hotel Im staying at is just lovely and everything is marble and it is the nicest hotel i´ve stayed in for the whole trip so far.  I have one of those things next to the toilet (can´t think of what its called, so had to check it out, lol).  The hotel let me check in at 9am which I think was very nice of them, so I got to have a bath for the first time in ages....have been having showers everywhere I go (hope u weren´t thinking I didn´t bathe or shower, lol).

I did the tourist thing and caught the bus that goes around the city....its such a lovely city (I say that about everywhere don´t I).  It has greenery, trees, bushes, flowers everywhere...makes melbourne NOT look like the garden state.  The only problem is that every afternoon it absolutely pours with rain, I mean u get drenched.  So sightseeing has mainly been completed by me before 4pm.

Today I headed off to Antonio Gaudi´s park Guel park....wow amazing, beautiful, amazing, lol..... it truly is a piece of art meeting nature, with magnificent views of the city.  I spent a couple of hours here just exploring.  Then moved onto discover Gaudi´s cathedral.....now this is the most breath taking piece of architecture I have ever seen....it literally took my breath away.  I have always dreamt of seeing it, and boy was it worth it, so its still a work in progress, but every stone in that cathedral is a piece of art.  It has the most unbelievable curves and lines it truly is amazing and the highlight of Barcelona for me.

There is lots of Gaudi´s work scattered throughout the city and he certainly was one of a kind!  I climbed up to the very top of the cathedral (took about an hour due to being a weekend and so busy) but well worth it.  I took a million photos so will bore you all soon with them when i get the opportunityt o post some.  The computer Im on now is at the hotel and they don´t have usb port.

Tonight is my last night in Barcelona and Im intent on having Paella...have done the tapas, now onto what Spain is known for...think I will make it seafood Paella - yummy.  Oh and wine is soooooo cheap, even cheaper here than South Africa only a couple of euros for a bottle, not bad I tell you.

Its raining AGAIN, just when I was about to go out, bummer, it is the only place I´ve been so far in 3 weeks where it has rained...but the weather is quite warm and humid, my hair is a total frizz ball, oh well.

Next stop is USA, land of the loud and obese (haha just kidding - NOT).  Im so excited to see my girls again.  I can´t wait to see them, I have missed them so much and everytime I see somethign amazing I think ´´I wish I´d bought them too´¨.  Oh well they are young and Im sure will experience this too very soon.

So Disneyland, Vegas and LA here I come.

Walking, walking, walking, walking and more walking!!!

Bonjoir, Ca Va?

Paris - what a wonderful city.  I have fallen in love with it, despite the dog poo everywhere.  I stood in it as soon as I arrived, hahar.  I stayed near the sacre coer and wandered up there the first night, all of a sudden there was this huge church, they were actually having a service, some french nuns playing the harp and singing, lol....thought I was in a movie or somehing...I kept picturing Madeline the french cartoon.

Thanks to my friend Kerry who carefully explained the underground before I left I mastered it pretty quickly and went exploring.  It is brilliant as it takes you to any part of inner Paris for 5 euro a day, and let me tell you I got my money´s worth.  although despite the public transport I still managed to walk between 15 - 20 kms the first day, boy was i pooped the first night, but managed to keep going til about 10pm.  Perhaps i am crazy -ok don´t answer that, but I feel very safe walking the streets by myself.  The city doesn´t seem to stop so there are people everywhere all night long.  I think one of the nights I was there France were playing soccer so every bar, cafe was packed.

There has been so many highlights in Paris I just don´t know where to begin.  Everytime I visit a different place or monument I say, ´´it can´t get better than this, but of course it does´.  visited the eiffel tower during the day and then again the next day (but at night).  I couldn´t be bothered walking the stairs as I truly believe I´d walked enough stairs to last me a lifetime!!!  So took the lift all the way to the top...it was amazing, truly beautiful.  I then came down and watched it light up for about 10 minutes (does this on the hour).  Wow, eating dinner in the park under the eiffel tower as it ´showed off´was awesome.

The city´s architecture is lovely, every building is unique - although I seem to get lost alot, hence triple the amount of walking to get back to my original destination.  The only issue I have here is with people openly picking their nose, spitting and of course the dogs shitting everywhere..... i guess you get used to it??  I saw a maltese shitzu and got very home sick for Odie and Daisy.

The hotel I am staying at is nice, and the service is fantastic...ok the doorman is black and speaks with a french accent, lol....and he is friendly.  I have come to the conclusions though that I do not like french breakfasts....yuk.  im not a croissant fan and even the cereal sucks.  So I visited the supermarket a couple of doors up and bought some fruit and yoghurt, when I went the take a plastic shopping bag the attendant nearly had a fit and was trying to tell me I owed her 3cents, lol..... so I handed her some money and she gave me chance, of course I said merci (if I knew how to say úp yours´ i think I would have).

Í seriously contemplated not visiting Barcelona and staying longer in France, however I´ve always wanted to see Antonio Gaudi´s architecture so I will make the trek and have to visit Paris another day.  Oh nearly forgot to say that opposite the Louve there is the most amazing church (can´t think of what it is called) and there were no tourists in it (well except me, lol) and it was the nicest of all that I visited, even Notre Dame, there was just somethign very special about it.  Oh the Louve is huge and I think I only managed to see about 1/2 of it.  Yes Mona Lisa was there, I wasn´t terribly impressed, could have somethign to do with the bossy women who only let you look at it for 2 seconds before ushering you away.  I wanted to say ´whats the problem lady, if I look at it for more than 10 seconds will I turn into stone - does it have the Madusa curse or something?´´  ha ha ha.  I much prefered the spanish and french art (huge paintings) and the stone sculptures.

Well off to Barcelona, Au revouir

p.s.  I dont care if I cant spell either!!!

How to get lost by Donna

Caught the bus to London from Manchester, it took over 4 hours which I found particularly painful.  I didn't have a clue where I was or how to get to my hotel so hopped into the famous black cab and before I knew it I was in Paddington.  My room was on the top floor, with a great view, but I'm telling you the stairs to the top were a killer.

Thought I will take a nice stroll through hyde park, well I actually got lost and ended up in the arabic part of town, but eventually stumbled on marble arch and wholla across the road was hyde park.  Ok so I didn't realise how big it was and walked all the way down the Kennsington palace, then onto Earls court, miles away from anywhere.  Although there were some nice shops there.  I was desperatly trying to find Harrods before 7pm as it closed then and I'd been walking for what seemed like hours.  Finally I found it and had a stroll inside for about 1/2 hour or so, loved the fresh fish display - it was awsome.  Problem now was I was totally lost and spent an hour or two walking home in the rain and didn't get back to the hotel til after 9.30pm!

The next day (Sunday) I decided to not take a chance at walking around by myslef and caught the 'big bus' and toured around on it all day.....it was fun and certainly got to see all the sites, just hopped on and off as I pleased.  Then took a river cruise, however got on the wrong bus and ended up going to Greenwich village, u know where world time or something is set.  I always thought that place was in Sweeden or Switzerland for some strange reason, so imagine my surprise!!  Anyway it was a nice cruise and i got it for nothing - bonus, nobody asked me for any money.

Can't say I had a favourite monument of place, trafalgar sq. was cool and so was wesminster abby (spelling???).

But have to admit its a hard city to manouver around in, and if you think I could figure the tube out - NO WAY.

Monday morning caught the Eurorail to Paris...... it was lovely, 21/2 hrs going about 350kms an hour.  Cleanest and roomiest toilets around.

Onto Paris

Manchester

I arrived in Manchester Wednesday morning after having a 2 hour stop in Frankfurt - man is that airport huge!

It was so nice to see gloria and david, I nearly cried when I saw them...ok I did cry, lol.  Well it had been like 3 yrs.  We instantly laughed and laughed and reminisced on old times.  David's driving had not improved what-so-ever and I honestly thought I may lose my life in the North of England, lol.

We travelled far and wide the first day and I certainly saw a heck of alot of the english countryside.  So green and lovely.  I adored the hedges and dry stone walls seperating the paddocks, looks nicer than barbed wire.  The houses are unbelievable, so old and well maintained, they are like mansions.  We went to a beautiful lake and has a half hour cruise which was lovely-i tell you my alzheimers is kicking in as I cant remember the name of anythign....i can tell u started with 'W' and was in the lake district!

I really wanted to visit Blackpool as that is where my grandfather lived til he was 10....before he was shipped out with his family to oz.  it certainly wasn't what I expected.  At night there is an illumination, which basically is the poor mans vegas, lol.  It was ok, lots of fair type activities on the piers, like a carnival.  And there are trams that are lit up and decorated....it was all a tad gawdy actually.

On the way home we stopped at a typical english pub and had roast with yorkshire pud.  First time I've had it, and it was nice.  I was suffering badly from jetlag and kept falling asleep all the way home to Gloria and Davids...they live in Heaton Mercey a lovely suburb of Manchester.  Their house is so cute, compact and modern.. They even have a pet squirrel, ok well not a pet but gloria feeds it corn.  I kept seeing it but couldnt manage a picture.

The next few days we drove around like mad people....Wales, South of Manchester and Liverpool.  Liverpool I found grotty and not too appealing, however they have this big push called Liverpool 08 and basically they are prettying up the city and have set 2008 as the finish, boy do they have a long way to go.  Their accent is cool, just like the beatles, I had to stop myslef from giggling when they opened their mouths.  Mind you nobody seemed to be able to understand me!!

Also visited Manchester shopping centre, and was told it was huge - pft, it was tiny in comparison to Chaddy or Southland.  But the fashions are lovely and I did buy a couple of things to try and SQUEEZE into my bag.

It was sad saying good bye to DAvid and Gloria knownig I wont see them for another year when they are visiting oz.  Mind you they probably wanted to see the back of me as I ate all their vegemite!!!

Possibly the most beautiful place on earth!

Flew into Capetown on Sunday about midday.....luckily got a direct flight - yippeeeeeee.

Wow was my first impression ... the mountains are magical.  I went straight to the hotel, Ritz which is in Sea Point, about 20mins walk from V&A Waterfront.  Not a bad part of town.  The conceirge was just wonderful (he was black with a french accent - OMG heaven!)  he walked me to the bus (or taxi) and told them to look after me, lol.  I had a fantastic view from my room and couldn't believe I was looking onto the mountains etc whilst laying in bed.

I took a tour of the winelands....bugger forgotten what its called, think Stellenbosch- and on the  tour were an american family from florida, their daughter was a few yrs younger than me.  Well by the end of the tour I got tipsy and the giggles as the mother was such a typical american mum, lol.  The winelands are only like 30 mins from the City of Capetown.  Ok I might be biased but the wine is nothing on Australian white.

Also did the best of the Cape Tour where we travelled around the coast, it took my breath away, kinda like great ocean road, but with amazing mountains about double the size.  Walked up to the Cape of Good Hope, geez I realised how unfit I am....bloomin heck it was steep.  I was disappointed as the baboons were hiding that day....after Gabrielle kept warning me that they would steal my bag!

I found Capetown alot safer than Joburg.  I wasn't the least bit afraid of walking by myslef, mind you I was in the Gay Capital of Africa, lol.   I;m not kidding it is more gay than StKilda, i was in the internet 'gay' cafe where I felt extremely safe as I knew nobody was going to hit on me.....except perhaps a woman, but that certainly did not happen.  I loved the shopping too. although am having a terrible time packing my bags each time I need to move on!!

I was extremely sad to leave South Africa, I would have like to spend alot more time there.  I found the people amazing (yes even the Afrikaans, lol) and think a couple from Fourways in Joburg whom I met on Safari wanted to adopt me, lol....they were 65yo.  Basil the guy reminded me of con, he was soooo funny.

I actually had a tear in my eye as I left SA as I kinda knew it would be a hard act to follow.

What an experience

Friday morning i departed Joburg for Nelspruit via SAA  - in a little plane only 3 seats across.....it was fine and only a 30 min flight.  I was met by Esther an Afrikaans woman about my age wtih 2 children the same age as Molly & Gab.  Well did we gasbag the whole 90 mins to the game lodge, lol.  I tell you doesn't matter where u r from you will always have similar issues raising kids!

As we were arriving at Idube Game lodge we passed 3 elephants, I was pretty excited about that, Esther said 'wait till you have a game drive'.  I was welcomed wiht a cold drink, yey and given a tour of the lodges.  I had my own challet which was soooo beautiful, i felt like a princess.  I was blown away by the wildlife just on the garden...worthogs, impala, vevere monkeys and much more.  It was freaky seeing monkeys in my garden and took a little getting used to.

My frist drive started at 4pm and went until nearly 8pm.  I cant explain what it was like seeing elephants a couple of metres away, wild!!  I kept having to pinch myslef as I couldn't believe I was here witnessing it for myself.  On the first day I saw zebras, elephants, lions (lots n lots of them)...too many to mention (hint look at my pics).

The one thing that hit me was the amazing sunset, wow....it was so beautiful.  I found the colours of the bush amazing, such wonderful contrasts.

Now the other amazing thing about the Idube Game Lodge was the staff and the food...OMG did I say I was going to loose weight, me no think so....I ate so much, it was all yummy.  I have a new fav nibble too, biltong, but the chili small ones.  They are especially nice with a G&T.

I cant believe how brave I have been on this trip....not only did I venture out on my own, but I managed to go on a walk for 90 mins in the bush with all the wildlife...ok I had a beautiful black ranger called Andreas with gun in hand.....I said gun!!  Its a different perspective when you are out of the vehicle, and yes a little nerve raking too.

I was very, very sad to leave Idube, but ventured on Sunday. Again a wonderful driver who gave me a guided tour on my way back to the Airport.

On to Cape Town....
